Do Not Throw Away Pineapple Leaves:
The ESG Innovation Behind a Global Cycling Hidden Champion
Beside a peaceful industrial road in Mingjian Township, Nantou, PAX has specialized in tire repair patches for more than four decades. Today, the company distributes its products to over 60 countries and ranks among the top three globally in market share, standing as a true hidden champion of Taiwan. After two years of intensive research and development, PAX introduced a breakthrough tire sealant extracted from pineapple leaves. Non-toxic, environmentally responsible, and fundamentally carbon-negative, this creation shows how agricultural waste can open fresh horizons for sustainable manufacturing.
PAX operates with approximately 70 dedicated employees in central Taiwan. By taking farm residues that growers previously had to discard, the team has built a vital bridge connecting traditional petrochemical products with green sustainability.
The secret lies in the long, durable fibers found in pineapple leaves. PAX developed the GA Sealant to protect synthetic rubber tires, which are primarily produced from petrochemical materials. When a puncture occurs, the natural fibers instantly plug the breach, preventing air loss while extending the overall service life of tires containing on average 60 percent synthetic rubber. This reduction in scrap tires achieves clear environmental benefits and gives industrial rubber goods a sustainable new profile.
Four Decades of Trust Built on Pure Natural Rubber
What established PAX as an international powerhouse before this venture into agricultural innovation? For more than 40 years, the flagship offering of the company has been a two-centimeter tire repair patch made from 100 percent natural rubber. Widely exported and trusted by major cycling brands across the world for OEM manufacturing, these patches have brought PAX global acclaim and steady annual revenues exceeding 200 million NT dollars.
PAX Chief Executive Officer Su Ching-hao explained that the enterprise has marketed under the PAX name since 1981. Early adoption of cross-border digital platforms allowed the company to showcase Taiwanese manufacturing excellence across dozens of continents. Su emphasized that the enduring success of the brand stems from an unwavering insistence on premium natural rubber, which provides superior elasticity, structural integrity, and proven riding safety. Positive user feedback has naturally fueled four decades of international growth.

Transforming Through Sustainable Governance and ESG Leadership
Taking the helm in 2019, Su Ching-hao guided PAX through an extensive operational evolution. The newly patented pineapple fiber sealant represents the tangible fruit of this transformation.
Su observed that traditional approaches limited manufacturing efficiency and created challenges in talent retention. In response, he infused modern corporate management with sustainable design, modernizing workspaces, refreshing visual branding, and even upcycling discarded freight pallets into a stylish employee cafeteria. In production, PAX added two advanced manufacturing lines, developed over 30 new products, and actively engaged with international industry exhibitions.
For PAX, sustainability serves as an essential competitive advantage when addressing global supply chains. The company has earned SGS verifications, completed ISO 14064 greenhouse gas audits, achieved ISO 14067 product carbon footprint certifications, and released full sustainability reporting. In addition, PAX installed a smart low-carbon energy management war room that tracks machinery power consumption in real time, guaranteeing consistent quality and process compliance. To date, PAX has actively aligned operations with eight United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, allowing the firm to build swift trust with eco-conscious international buyers.
Two Years of Engineering for Two-Minute Rapid Repairs
Creating the pineapple sealant demanded over two years of research and an investment exceeding 5 million NT dollars. Lin Yu-hung, Assistant Vice President of Research and Development at PAX, shared that trials examined various plants, including dragon fruit, before confirming that pineapple leaves offered the ideal fiber strength.
Partnering with National Chung Hsing University, PAX developed an efficient extraction technique where 40 grams of local pineapple leaves yield one gram of potent sealant. Suitable for bicycles, motorbikes, and passenger automobiles, the solution requires only injection into the tire valve followed by one to two minutes of wheel rotation to complete a secure seal.
Su emphasized that this formulation eliminates the need for open-air field burning, which previously generated severe smoke and greenhouse emissions. Currently, production consumes 50 to 60 metric tons of agricultural leaf residues from Nantou every year, a figure set to grow as adoption spreads. Through resourceful thinking, PAX proves that genuine industrial sustainability can begin with simple materials found right beside the fields.
